Former Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa has been arrested by the police and is set to appear before a Harare magistrate this afternoon.

Parirenyatwa was granted $500 bail by a Harare magistrate after appearing in court on a criminal abuse of office charge.

His lawyer Mr James Makiya said Dr Parirenyatwa is facing charges of criminal abuse of office.

He, however, said he would disclose the full details once his charges were read by the court.

Police sources said that Parirenyatwa, whose term of office ended on August 26 with President Emmerson Mnangagwa's inauguration, is facing corruption charges.

"He appointed a relative to head a hospital, while that relative was still employed by the National Pharmaceutical Company of Zimbabwe (NatPharm)," a police source familiar with the matter said.
