Warriors in match fixing scandal?

A French publication has reported that the Democratic Republic of Congo is being investigated for a case of possible match fixing in their game against Zimbabwe in the Afcon finals on Sunday.

DRC beat Zimbabwe by four goals to nill leading to the Southern African country crashing out of the tournament.

According to the paper, some influential business people with military connections in the DRC paid some players to make sure that Zimbabwe lost the game.

If found guilty, DRC will be banned from the tournament with the report indicating that Zimbabwe could bounce back in the Afcon.

In their previous encounters, Zimbabwe lost by a goal to Egypt in the opening match of the tournament and drew a goal each with Uganda in the second match.

The Ugandan coach punched his fist in the air in celebration after the match which could have gone either side.

Zimbabweans have started commenting on the matter with radio personality Larry Kwirirai advising people to exercise caution before believing allegations.

"We need evidence. Accusations without evidence are dangerous," said the broadcaster.

Zimbabwe People First spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire, commenting on the possibility of Zimbabwe being made to play in the tournament should DRC be found guilty and banned, saw no need for the warriors to have a second bite of the cherry.

"Why would match fixers be rewarded with a chance to fix another game?" said Mawarire.

The Zimbabwean national team is not new to allegations of match fixing after having in recent years been embroiled what was to be famously known as the Asiagate Scandal.
