Designers specialising in their application have always tried to look for different ways through which to expand the features and capabilities of angle sensors, and the angle position sensors of today are a far cry indeed from the angle sensors of yesterday. So, what should you know about the capabilities and uses of angle sensors today? Here’s a look at some top trends and advancements related to how angle sensors are applied in various scenarios in today’s world.

The basic purpose

The concept behind angle sensing or angle position sensing is simple: to measure the degree or level of rotation of a particular object around a central axis. Along with other types of sensors, angle sensors have the purpose of representing a mechanical or physical characteristic in a certain format, which is often electrical, which can be easily interpreted and understood as well as utilised by a machine or computer. In some particular cases, a characteristic (often physical) is converted mechanically into a second characteristic (physical as well), which is then measured. There are now many forms of angle position sensors and these angle sensors are able to utilise different technologies. The angle sensors of today are also increasingly versatile, and a good angle sensor can be utilised for various applications in a wide array of markets and industries.

A lot of room for growth

Nowadays, angle position sensors are becoming increasingly used in the automotive industry, especially when it comes to vehicles that are specially-designed to be used off-road, commercial and agricultural equipment, and in industrial mechanization or automation. The more widespread use of angle sensors in this capacity is hardly a surprise, considering the fact that more of the above-mentioned machines and equipment require specific sensors, specifically designed and manufactured to be suitable for use in harsher environments, such as environments with a lot of dirt, dust, extreme or intense temperature, and moisture. Some general uses of angle position sensors include the detection of the motor’s position on the trim of an outboard motor as well as the measurement of the forks’ angle on a forklift, to maintain balance and safety.

A much longer lifespan

The angle position sensors developed today have a seemingly endless lifespan, which makes them a great option for those who are looking for quality, durability, longevity, and value for money. Sensors like these are often a better alternative or option compared to potentiometers.

Choosing the best sensor for your needs or application

Angle position sensors are often classified by their specific IP rating, but for you to choose the best one for your needs, you need to know that these products are often offered in non-contact or contact configurations. If the angle position sensor will be applied in a harsher, more extreme environment or conditions, non-contact angle position sensors are ideal since abrupt or sudden movements and vibration will not affect their performance. There are also versions available suitable for non-harsh or non-extreme operating environments.
