The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe says it will shut down schools on Monday 22 July if the government does not address the salary concerns of their members by then.

In a statement on Tuesday ARTUZ said, "Teachers will be going for an early holiday if the government fails to address salary crisis by Monday 22 July 2019. Teachers are now incapacitated and can no longer render services."

The Union posted a payslip on Twitter and said, "This is a teacher's July payslip. A teacher can not buy 100 liters of petrol whole month. We have been robbed of our dignity. We have been reduced to paupers. Mthuli Ncube enough is enough. You have neglected us. We have no option but to fight back."

The teachers want to be paid US$500 or the local currency at Interbank rate.

ARTUZ has also encouraged its members to engage in income generating initiatives to support their families during these trying times.
