Former Eskom chief executive Matshela Koko's company Matshela Energy has been awarded a tender to construct a solar plant to ease Zimbabwe's energy crisis.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) said the company will "construct, own, operate and maintain the 100MW solar power plant called Matshela Energy" in Gwanda.

"Subject to the Electricity Act and the terms and conditions of the licence, the licensee may supply electricity to any transmission, distribution or supply licensee who purchases electricity for re-sale and with approval of the Authority to any one or more consumers."

Koko took to Twitter to announce the great project.

"Matshela Energy brings to the region a 100MW Solar PV Power Plant with 240MWh of battery storage. I was forcefully diverted to my destiny by President Cyril Ramaphosa and Malusi Gigaba. Little did they know they were pushing me to greater heights Here is it."

Koko has been a subject of various corrupt allegations relating to Eskom in South Africa.

He has for a long time denied allegations that he used his position to aid the controversial Gupta family in capturing the embattled power utility.

Koko said he would never be caught for committing any impropriety during his time at the helm of Eskom. Koko added that he was "a victim", saying his former colleagues had turned on him in an effort to deflect allegations made against them.

Allegations of corruption at Eskom have been the subject of a parliamentary inquiry, a treasury investigation and are currently being examined before the Justice  Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture.
