BULAWAYO-BASED football giants Highlanders have been dragged to court by the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) for failure to remit over $34 000 workers monthly contributions towards their pension and accidents cover.

NSSA had initially filed summons demanding the payment of $34 551,85 but Highlanders could not file an entry to defend the summons until NSSA filed an application for default judgment.

In its summons, NSSA submitted that it was claiming against Highlanders an order for a sum of $34 551,85 being the outstanding NSSA contributions as at last date of inspection with interest at the rate of 5% per annum.

It also prayed for an order that the defendant pay costs of suit on an attorney to client scale.

In its declaration of the suit, NSSA submitted that Highlanders is an employer of labour and is registered with NSSA in terms of Statutory Instrument 68 of `1990 and 193 of 1993 and has a legal obligation to pay monthly contributions before the 10th of every month in terms of Statutory Instrument 393 of 1993.

"As at last date of inspection, the defendant has accrued arrears in the sum of $34 551,85, wherefore plaintiff's claim against the defendant is for an order for the sum of $34 551,85 being the outstanding NSSA contributions as at last date of inspection with interest at the rate of 5% per annum," reads the declaration in part.

Details of the period of default are not given in the court papers and Highlanders FC is yet to respond to the law suit.
