Political parties to sign peace pledge

All political parties and independent candidates contesting in the 2018 harmonised elections set for July 30 will converge in Harare where they are expected to sign a peace pledge making a public commitment to peace and holding of free, fair and credible elections.

Briefing journalists in the capital on the signing of the national peace pledge set for next Tuesday 26 June, the chairperson of the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC) Retired Justice Selo Masole Nare said all political parties have been invited to make a public commitment  and willingness to peace before, during and after elections.

"The peace pledge will be a demonstration of the political parties, commitment to seeking redress of possible disputes arising before, during and after elections as provided in the constitution and the electoral laws of the country and in particular the code of conduct which is now law," he said.

As part of efforts towards creating a peaceful environment for elections, the NPRC has also set up a conflict early warning platform which meets every Thursday, engage, share conflicts information with a view to mobilise timely response.

"The NPRC has so far set up conflict early warning response platform where members of the peace building ecosystem who have early warning mechanisms at the community level meet to share information on conflict signs so that they will be addressed without delay," noted Retired Justice Nare.

The historic event will bring together stakeholders including academia, business community, churches, civil society, traditional leaders, international observers, the security sector and people with disabilities among others, to witness the signing of the peace pledge by the political leadership in the country ahead of the forthcoming polls.
