Informal sector blasts military and govt over streets killings in Harare

Streetwise Informal Traders Director Percy Mcijo has lambasted the government and the military for failing to recognise that they caused the loss of innocent lives during an MDC Alliance demonstration in Harare on August 1 this year.

Six people were shot dead during the demonstration when MDC Alliance supporters protested over the delay in announcement of presidential results by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

"Its a pity  that innocent people died as a result of the military's over reaction and more so its not the army's responsibility to deal with demonstrations, as they played the role of police," he said.

He said this led to the unnecessary death of six people indicating that the military  should remain in the barracks and allow the police to maintain law and order. He said for the president to apportion the blame on the MDC Alliance is misplaced and misleading.

"Its well known that the army short and killed innocent civilians and its the army to beheld accountable for this unwarranted violation of human rights, the right to life enshrined in the constitution," he said.
