Shoot-out robbers arrested

A gang of suspected armed robbers, who exchanged gun shots with police detectives in Waterfalls on Thursday last week, will appear in court today.

The notorious gang was arrested after a shootout with detectives who were tracking them.

Deputy National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the shooting incident and the arrest.

"The suspected criminals include, Godfrey Josi, 35, Austin Ncube, 27, Harmony Nyathi,29, Polite Madamombe ,34, Wisdom Tariro,22 were arrested after a shootout with detectives.

"On November 1, the detectives received information of the accused criminals who were involved in a spate of robberies in Harare.

"The detectives tracked them working on the information and came across them in Waterfalls area where they instructed them to stop.

"In the process they resisted and sped off using their gate-away Mercedes Benz."

Added Ass Comm Nyathi:

"As a result, there was a shootout where the suspects' car stopped and they were found with pistols, live rounds, explosives, detonator cables, registrations number plates of different cars, work suits, hammers, revolvers."

However, Ass Comm Nyathi, further said the detectives arrested the two accused at the scene before arresting the other later after he had tried to escape.

"The other accused was found with 2 revolvers before the other two were arrested where they were found with whiskeys, which were part of the robbery in Ruwa.

"So they are clearing the robbery which occurred in Ruwa and Chitungwiza in October.

"Another one in Southlea Park and in the CBD where valuables worth $6 000 which are yet to be recovered.

"The suspects also robbed in Waterfalls and another one in Chivhu where they robbed US dollars, Rands and bond notes."

Ass Comm Nyathi however, warned the criminals:

"Police are sending a clear message to anyone who engages criminal acts that our officers are ready to effect the arrests to ensure that the law takes its course.

"We want to applaud members of the public who are cooperating in a bid to fight robbery cases."

Meanwhile, the suspects are expected in court today after the investigating officer had applied for a warrant of further detention on Friday last week.
