ZANU-PF youths have savaged musician Thomas "Mukanya" Mapfumo following his remarks that he does not want to be buried at the National Heroes' Acre as it has lost its significance.

Mukanya, a critic of the Zanu-PF government, was reacting to reports that former president Robert Mugabe, while on his deathbed, had declined a heroes' acre burial.
Mugabe reportedly said his wish was to be buried close to his mother in Zvimba.

Zanu-PF deputy secretary for youth Lewis Matutu said Mapfumo has no place at the heroes' acre, describing him as a traitor.

"He ran away from this country and if he was a true patriot, why should he run off to western countries. He is one of the people causing the western countries to impose illegal sanctions on us. He is a traitor and he must keep quiet," he said.

Zanu-PF youth political commissar Godfrey Tsenengamu said the Zimbabwe is not desperate for national heroes and Mukanya is not national hero material.

"We are not desperate for national heroes and who told him he will be buried there anyway? There are several other people who contributed much to the country who deserve to be called heroes, and not him. This is an attention seeking stunt," he said.

Only one musician in Zimbabwe's history, Oliver Mtukudzi, was conferred national hero status but his family declined to have him buried at the national shrine, saying his wish was to be buried at his rural home.
