Mnangagwa flies into protests in New York

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday left for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the United States, where the main opposition party, the MDC, has lined up protests against worsening human rights abuses and his style of governance.

The protests set for today are coming on the backdrop of the abduction of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association acting president Peter Magombeyi last Saturday.
He was found on Thursday dumped in Nyabira, about 35km from Harare, and claiming to have been electrically tortured.

This also comes amid reports that over 50 political and pro-democracy activists were kidnapped since January and after police brutally broke up peaceful protests that had been lined up last month by the MDC against the flagging economy.

The MDC dispatched its deputy organising secretary Happymore Chidziva to New York to organise the protests in collaboration with the party's North America province.

"We are here (in New York) for the mass actions," Chidziva told the Daily News earlier this week.

"We will not rest till the people of Zimbabwe get the freedom they deserve…"

The New York protests come as Mnangagwa's plans to end Zimbabwe's decades long international isolation appeared to be dead in the water following the abductions and closing of democratic space.

But government spokesperson Nick Mangwana told the Daily News yesterday that Mnangagwa would be in New York to call for the removal of sanctions imposed on the country over human rights abuses.

Although the European Union (EU) has lifted its targeted sanctions on senior government officials — the US still maintains economic restrictions on Zimbabwe, much to the annoyance of Harare and also most African states.

Recently, at a Sadc Heads of State meeting in Tanzania — the regional bloc committed to pressure the West for the unconditional removal of sanctions, setting aside October 25 of this year as anti-sanctions day.

In a short statement, Mangwana said Mnangagwa would use the opportunity to call for the removal of the sanctions.

"The President is going to UNGA and we are looking forward to the speeches and presentations from all Sadc leaders as they will all contain a call for the removal of illegal sanctions against Zimbabwe.

"There is no reason for Zimbabwe to continue to be marginalised, bullied and ostracised by the community of nations," said Mangwana.

At the turn of the millennium, western countries imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe, citing human rights abuses, disrespect of property rights and the lack of rule of law after the Zanu-PF government had embarked on an ad hoc and often violent land reform programme meant to correct historical land imbalances.

The country's then President, Robert Mugabe, accused the west of seeking to punish him because of his pro-black policies and used every opportunity at the international stage to rail against sanctions.
